Twinning with the Film makers of Macedonia
There is a move to form a partnership between Union Méditerranéenne de Cinéma et Vidéo (UMCV) and the Macedonian Federation ...
We were able to meet with Mitze Chapovski, the young Macedonian partnership representative, during the 2013 Unica film festival in Fieberbrunn, Austria, to exchange our respective news and talk about our projects for 2014. It was a pleasure to meet with each other after months of exchanging emails and documents. We thanked Mitze for his package filled with magazines about the Macedonian film scene and selections of Macedonian films on dvds.
Always smiling and open-minded, Mitze surprised us by saying he had been studying French for a year in the French Cultural Center in Skopje. His friends had asked him “why French, why not German?” and he told them of his attachment to the French language. He will continue studying French this year. We hope to welcome him one day for a stay in “immersion” so he can perfect his French! Anyway, it is a very good start.

We profited from being together by viewing some recent prize-winning Macedonian short films. UMCV would like to show a selection of Macedonian films at our next annual regional contest in 2014 in the southern Provencal town of Ventabren. We then discussed the films over a cup of coffee.
Jeanne said she would be able to subtitle the films selected in French, as they already have English subtitles. We decided on a first selection. At least one film made by Mitze’s father, Petre Chapovski, a well-known Macedonian director and active member of the Skopje film club, will be shown. The selection will include films on various subjects and genres, all prize-winners, a panorama of non professional Macedonian works.

We talked about the wish to invite a Macedonian jury member for our Regional festival in Ventabren. Mitze suggested the name of a well-known woman writer and film critic and he will ask her about availability in April 2014.
As far as financing goes, UMCV will cover the jury member’s expenses at the festival. However, for the trip to France, we must find a means of financing it, perhaps through the ministries of culture …or another source…of funding.
We spoke about another project, further off, which would be to undertake a co-production between the members of UMCV and the Macedonian Federation, to be discussed in the future.

Macedonian filmmakers are welcome to visit the website of UMCV, for that we will have to consider summarizing our activities…in English!
It was time for the Unica festival in Austria to begin and our meeting ended on a positive note: Vive le jumelage!
