Mat was seriously ill at the time of the presentation. The medal was presented by Kees Tervoort and accepted on Mat's behalf by his wife, Loes Gerritsen.
Mat was able to watch the presentation as it happened through a computer video link.
Sadly, Mat passed away a few months later.
