I have been involved with movie making since 1956 in one form or another. I started as an amateur, using Standard 8 and then joined the BBC in Television News. Later in my career I made in the region of 450 films for The National Coal Board, followed by many more for an advertising agency and a Japanese video equipment manufacturer.

Having worked together with the IAC (the British national organisation) over a number of years I was made an Honorary Fellow of the Institute in 1989 and joined the governing Council in 2014. I have been Chairman since October 2016.

My main concern for both the IAC and for UNICA, is to find ways for both organisations to shed the image, that they exist only for old people. Many brilliant movies are made, and entered into our competitions by young people but, largely, those young people would not think of joining their national organisation. Without younger people joining it is inevitable that the proportion of older people as members of these organisations will grow.

My second aim is to ensure that when the UNICA Congress comes to the UK in 2020, the IAC  puts on the best show possible. This will be the first time the UNICA has been to the UK since 1951. It has to have been well worth the wait.

My stint as Chairman of the IAC is due to end in October 2018 and I will then be able to devote a large proportion of my time to helping UNICA lead the way to a well-deserved recognition of the world of amateur movie-making.

,J'ai été impliqué dans la réalisation de films depuis 1956 sous une forme ou une autre. J'ai commencé comme amateur, en utilisant Standard 8, puis j'ai rejoint la BBC dans le journal télévisé. Plus tard dans ma carrière, j'ai fait environ 450 films pour The National Coal Board, suivis de beaucoup d'autres pour une agence de publicité et un fabricant japonais d'équipement vidéo.

Ayant travaillé avec l'IAC (l'organisme nationale britannique) pendant un certain nombre d'années, j'ai été nommé membre honoraire de l'Institut en 1989 et j'ai rejoint le Conseil d'administration en 2014. Je suis président du conseil d'administration depuis octobre 2016.

Ma principale préoccupation, tant pour l'IAC que pour l'UNICA, est de trouver des moyens pour que les deux organisations se débarrassent de l'image qu'elles n'existent que pour les personnes âgées. Beaucoup de films brillants sont réalisés et inscrits à nos concours par des jeunes, mais, dans une large mesure, ces jeunes ne penseraient pas à rejoindre leur organisme nationale. Sans l'adhésion de personnes plus jeunes, il est inévitable que la proportion de personnes âgées parmi les membres de ces organisations augmentera.

Mon deuxième objectif est de faire en sorte que, lorsque le Congrès de l'UNICA se rendra au Royaume-Uni en 2020, l'IAC présente le meilleur spectacle possible. Ce sera la première fois que l'UNICA se rend au Royaume-Uni depuis 1951. Cela a dû valoir la peine d'attendre.

Mon mandat en tant que président de l'IAC prendra fin en octobre 2018 et je pourrai alors consacrer une grande partie de mon temps à aider l'UNICA à ouvrir la voie à une reconnaissance bien méritée du monde du cinéma amateur.

Seit 1956 beschäftige ich mich in der einen oder anderen Form mit dem Filmemachen. Ich begann als Amateur, benutzte Standard 8 und trat dann der BBC in Fernsehnachrichten bei. Später in meiner Karriere drehte ich 450 Filme für The National Coal Board, gefolgt von vielen weiteren für eine Werbeagentur und einen japanischen Videogerätehersteller.

Nach mehrjähriger Zusammenarbeit mit der IAC (das britischen national Gremium) wurde ich 1989 zum Ehrenmitglied des Instituts ernannt und trat 2014 dem Regierungsrat bei. Ich bin seit Oktober 2016 Vorsitzender.

Mein Hauptanliegen sowohl für die IAC als auch für die UNICA ist es, Wege zu finden, wie beide Organisationen das Image ablegen können, dass sie nur für alte Menschen existieren. Viele brillante Filme werden von jungen Leuten gedreht und an unseren Wettbewerben teilgenommen, aber vor allem würden diese jungen Leute nicht daran denken, ihrer nationalen Organisation beizutreten. Ohne den Beitritt jüngerer Menschen ist es unvermeidlich, dass der Anteil der älteren Menschen als Mitglieder dieser Organisationen wächst.

Mein zweites Ziel ist es, dafür zu sorgen, dass die IAC, wenn der UNICA-Kongress im Jahr 2020 nach Großbritannien kommt, die bestmögliche Leistung erbringt. Dies ist das erste Mal seit 1951, dass die UNICA in Großbritannien ist. Das Warten muss sich gelohnt haben.

Meine Tätigkeit als Vorsitzender des IAC endet im Oktober 2018 und ich werde dann einen großen Teil meiner Zeit darauf verwenden können, der UNICA dabei zu helfen, den Weg zu einer wohlverdienten Anerkennung der Welt des Amateurfilms zu ebnen.
